Vienna, Austria is one of my favorite European cities. It has stunning architecture with gorgeous cathedrals and palaces, the restaurants are divine, the music and art scene is cool, and the museums are next level. The shopping is incredible too and I always find the best wardrobe pieces on the main shopping strip, Mariahilfer Straße. Definitely investigate which shows or exhibits are going on when you visit because you’re sure to find some hidden gems. In this blog I’ll tell you the best things to do in Vienna for a weekend trip.
Naschmarkt
Naschmarkt is Vienna’s bustling open-air market with tons of delicious food stands and restaurants, and a great place to begin or end your day of sightseeing in Vienna. Indulge in the vibrant atmosphere of the Naschmarkt and delight your senses with fresh produce, aromatic spices, and local delicacies. Don’t forget to enjoy a traditional Viennese coffee and savor a slice of Sachertorte. On weekend mornings they have a flea market with artisan shops to pick up your souvenirs, clothes, and hand-crafted goods. I love the buzz that an outdoor market brings, and Naschmarkt is one of the best in Europe. Stay awhile having a snack or meal at one of the many restaurants’ outdoor terraces. The buildings surrounding it are a sight to see themselves as well.
Mariahilfer Straße
It literally means “Mary help me street”. I think it’s a fitting description for the amount of money I spend here each time I visit Vienna (even when I tell myself I won’t, but I find the most unique pieces that seem to scream my name). The main shopping strip with everything from thrift to high-end, and even if you’re not in the mood to shop until you drop, it’s a nice walk.
MuseumsQuartier and Maria-Theresien Platz
If museums are your thing, you’ll want to spend an extra day or two taking in all of the magnificent museums that Vienna has to offer. The Leopold and Mumok modern art exhibitions are all located in the MuseumsQuartier. If museums aren’t your thing, the plaza is a great place to people watch and grab a coffee. Heading toward the city center after the MuseumsQuartier, you’ll pass by the green and lively Maria-Theresen Platz where you’ll find the must-see Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches).
Schönbrunn Palace
Immerse yourself in the opulence of Schönbrunn Palace, a Baroque masterpiece. Wander through lavishly adorned rooms, marvel at frescoes and chandeliers, and explore the manicured gardens with statues, fountains, and panoramic views from the Gloriette.
Heldenplatz
Just past Maria-Theresien Platz is Heldenplatz, where the Hofburg is located. A former palace, it’s now the residence and workplace of the president. If you’re feeling fancy, you can take a horse carriage ride from the drivers parked near Heldenplatz.
Stephansplatz and Innere Stadt
Stephansplatz is the gorgeous city center of Vienna. St. Stephen’s, after which the plaza is named, is a beautiful Gothic-style cathedral there. Explore the historic Innere Stadt, the First District, and experience the awe-inspiring presence of St. Stephen’s Cathedral at Stephansplatz. Marvel at its Gothic architecture and intricate details as you soak in the atmosphere of this iconic square.
Schloss Belvedere
If the weather is warm I would walk from Stephansplatz to Schloss Belvedere, but if it’s winter it’s better to take the tram. Along the walk you can stop by Karlskirche, another famous cathedral. The Schloss Belvedere is a massive baroque palace with beautiful gardens on either side. Take a tour of the outside and gardens for free, or enter the palace for around 16€.
Vienna’s walking tour invites you to discover the city’s hidden treasures, embrace its vibrant culture, and immerse yourself in the charm that fills its streets. From the historic Innere Stadt and Stephensplatz to the lively Naschmarkt, Vienna’s magic awaits at every turn. So, put on your walking shoes and let the adventure begin!
