The Best Things to do in Lincoln, Nebraska

Nestled in the rolling plains of Nebraska, Lincoln is a city that isn’t necessarily on everyone’s travel bucket list. Maybe you heard of it from the movie Yes Man (unfortunately the Telephone Museum is now permanently closed), or from the movie Nebraska. I grew up in a small town near Lincoln and went to University there, and in this blog I’ll outline the top attractions for tourists.

If you find yourself on a cross-country road trip and passing through Lincoln, or if you decide to pay a visit, below is a list of the best things to do in Lincoln, Nebraska, that will make your visit memorable.

Nebraska State Capital building against a blue sky

Explore the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Campus

A maybe biased alumni here, but the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) campus is beautiful. Located at the heart of the city, the campus is filled with unique architecture, lush green spaces, and a lively atmosphere. Take a stroll through the historic East Campus, visit the Sheldon Museum of Art, or catch a game at the Memorial Stadium – home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers (though Nebraska is a volleyball school, if you’re passing through in autumn, game days downtown have a contagious buzz).

Visit the Nebraska State Capitol

A trip to Lincoln wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Nebraska State Capitol. The building’s unique architecture, featuring a domed tower and intricate details inside and out, is unmissable for miles. Take a free guided tour to learn about the state’s government and history, and take the elevator to the top for a panoramic view of the city. (Unnecessary piece of knowledge: the State Capitol is called the Penis of the Plains by locals.)

Wander Through the Haymarket District

For a taste of local culture, head to the Haymarket District. This historic area, with its cobblestone streets and red-brick warehouses, is a hub of activity. Boutiques, galleries, and an array of restaurants and cafes line the streets, offering a perfect blend of charm and modern amenities. Stop by during the Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings from May – October for a true local experience.

Attend a Live Performance at the Lied Center for Performing Arts

For a dose of culture and entertainment, catch a live performance at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. From Broadway shows to classical concerts, this venue hosts a variety of events that cater to different tastes.

Dive into Art and Culture at the Lux Center for the Arts and the Sheldon Museum

Lincoln is more than just cornfields and football; it’s also a hub for the arts. The Lux Center for the Arts is a testament to the city’s thriving creative community. Explore contemporary art exhibitions, participate in workshops, or simply admire the local talent on display. The Lux Center is a welcoming space that reflects the city’s commitment to fostering a vibrant artistic scene.

The Sheldon Museum of Arts is located on UNL’s campus next to the Lied Center for Performing Arts. It hosts rotating art exhibitions throughout the year and is a serene place to relax.

Indulge Your Taste Buds

Lincoln’s food scene is diverse and delicious, offering something for every palate. From cozy coffee shops to upscale dining, the city has it all. Try Honest Abe’s Burgers and Freedom for mouthwatering burgers, Grateful Bread for a vegetarian bite, or The Oven for authentic Indian cuisine. Wash it down with a craft beer from one of the local breweries, such as Zipline Brewing Co. or Code Beer Company.

Take a Stroll in Wilderness Park or Pioneers Park

Wilderness Park is a hidden oasis just South of downtown Lincoln and Pioneers Park Nature Center to the West. With thousands of acres of prairies, woodlands, and wetlands, both are ideal spots for hiking, biking, or simply enjoying nature. The parks are also home to diverse wildlife, providing a serene retreat within the city limits.

Learn Something New at Morrill Hall

Unearth the prehistoric past at Morrill Hall, the natural history museum located on the UNL campus. With exhibits showcasing fossils, artifacts, and interactive displays, it’s an educational yet enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the Mammoth statue out front.

Savor the Serenity of Sunken Gardens

Cap off your Lincoln exploration with a visit to the Sunken Gardens, a beautiful oasis in the heart of the city. The meticulously landscaped gardens feature vibrant flowers, serene water features, and scenic pathways. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, quiet contemplation, or a picturesque picnic during the warmer months.

Attend a Live Show at one of Lincoln’s Many Music Venues

If you enjoy supporting local bands and watching live music, Lincoln has plenty of venues in the downtown area to explore, with shows happening weekly. Just as Lincoln does an amazing job of supporting the local art scene, music is no exception. The Zoo Bar, Duffy’s Tavern and The Bourbon are all within walking distance of one another. During the summer months they host lively outdoor concerts and festivals like Lincoln Calling and Zoo Fest. Bring a blanket and stop by the Sheldon Museum of Arts on Tuesdays in June for Jazz in June, where the gardens overflow with locals and smooth Jazz music descends from the stage.

Lincoln, Nebraska may not be on everyone’s travel bucket list (the state motto is literally “Nebraska: It’s Not For Everyone”), but it’s a city that surprises and delights those who take the time to explore it. As someone who spent the first quarter of her life living there, it’s a charming city with a lot to offer.

Have you been to Lincoln before? What did you think of it?
